Those interested in the development of the scientific method
might enjoy "Sidereus Nuncius or The Sidereal Messenger" by
Galileo Galilei, recently (1987) translated by Albert Van Helden.
Paperback, U. Chicago Press; ISBN (pbk) 0-226-27903-0.
In it, Galileo describes, in detail, what he saw with his 20X
telescope, and offers his analysis of the meaning of the data he
has recorded. This is the treatise that forever changed the
scientific community.
Van Helden's introduction and conclusion
offer insights into the reception of Galileo's work by both the
scientific community and the RCC. ~Sean
